I completed the fellowship at the Oral Facial Surgery Institute with the specific aim of honing my skills in orthognathic surgery, gaining exposure to open temporomandibular joint surgery, filling gaps in my trauma experience as a resident and gaining some experience in cosmetic surgery. During my time in St. Louis I was able to gain all of the experiences I was interested in. I feel very comfortable to practice the broad scope of our specialty. I gained confidence as a young surgeon operating on occasion on my own and covering all of the facial trauma call at a busy level I trauma center. I feel well prepared to move forward in my career as a full time attending at the University of Iowa Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training program.

Joseph W. Ivory, DDS

2014-2015 Oral Facial Surgery Institute Educational Fellowship Program

“After graduating residency and serving as staff for a year in a training program, I knew I wanted to take my training to a higher level.  I applied to OFSI because I saw the incredible case logs posted on their website and felt that the experience offered would nicely fill in the gaps in my own training.  I was not disappointed.  The extensive experience in TMJ surgery, cosmetics and implants have made me a much better surgeon and contributed to my successfully challenging my oral board examination with ABOMS.  The extensive experience of serving on the facial trauma service at a Level 1 Trauma Center has also prepared me for being deployed again in the future with the military.  I feel much more comfortable and confident in my skills and prepared to serve as a mentor in a residency training program.  I would highly recommend this program to any OMFS seeking to expand their skills in full scope Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.”

“My goal as an oral and maxillofacial surgeon is to practice as broad and as full a scope of practice as our unique and incredible specialty offers. At OFSI I saw an opportunity to not only expand and hone my skills in such areas as TMJ surgery, orthognathics and cosmetics, but also to learn how to grow and succeed a hospital based full scope OMFS practice, something that is growing more and more scarce.  I was not disappointed.  As fellows, we had the opportunity to focus on areas of our interest and operate with many local surgeons and specialists.  The vast exposure to surgery allowed me to confidently and successfully obtain board certification.  My interest and passion is facial cosmetics and aesthetics, which I was able to gain great surgical and academic experience during my year here. Furthermore, operating as a staff attending during trauma call was also an invaluable learning experience and I felt I gained immeasurable confidence and proficiency as a young surgeon.”

“Success has always been a main goal in my life and in order to fulfill this goal I knew it was essential for me to not only enter a field that I am passionate for, but to obtain a job that I love doing. The Fellowship program offered at the Oral Facial Surgery Institute has given me the opportunity to reach this significant goal. I have acquired various surgical skills, a full understanding of how to manage a practice, and how to get things done that are essential to have in the scope of practice I was looking for. I now have the confidence to go out in the “OMS World” and be the best in the field that I worked, trained and learned for.”

“The Oral Facial Surgery Educational Fellowship Program was beyond my expectations. The case load was the best I have experienced so far in my career. I performed more surgical cases this one year than in my four year residency program. Through the variety of cases I was able to grow and learn as an Oral and Maxillofacial surgeon. The experiences gained through this program will help me through my full-time surgical career.”
