Cosmetic Surgery
Cosmetic surgery is performed to
enhance the appearance of the body. Facial cosmetic surgery
enhances the structures of the face, head, and neck. Multiple
surgical specialties have developed expertise in cosmetic or
rejuvenation surgery, including Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons.
Is Cosmetic
Surgery reserved for people of advanced age?
Most cosmetic surgery is
performed on people over the age of 40, however, all age groups
may benefit from cosmetic surgery. Patients of advanced age may
wish to address changes to the face that were brought about by
the aging process, whereas, younger patients may wish to address
a birth defect, an accident, or other irregularity acquired
early in life.
Who can
benefit from Cosmetic Surgery?
Anyone can benefit from cosmetic
surgery. Currently, the majority of cosmetic surgery patients
are middle aged females, however, both males and younger people
are increasingly seeking improvement in appearance be it for
social purposes, work-life, or enhanced self-esteem. Cosmetic
surgery is no longer reserved for wealthy movie stars; it is now
widely available to patients of any age, gender, race, and
socioeconomic status.
What types of
cosmetic procedures are performed by Oral and Maxillofacial
Surgeons?
Most, but not all, oral and
maxillofacial surgeons limit their cosmetic procedures to the
head and neck area. A Rhytidectomy, or a face lift, is used to
remove excess sagging skin and reduce the appearance of
wrinkles. Blepharoplasty is performed to reduce excess skin and
"bags" from the upper and lower eyelids. Rhinoplasty,
or a nose job, changes the appearance of the nose and breathing.
Otoplasty is used to reduce prominent ears. Forehead and brow
lifts remove excess skin of the forehead to raise sagging
eyebrows and lids. Liposuction in the head and neck area can
remove unwanted facial fat. Fillers are used to lessen the
appearance of scars and wrinkles.
